It's something most women never think about, but for a huge number of men it can be extremely upsetting.

But when we see that Hollywood royalty John Travolta seems to have stooped to threading a weave through his remaining locks, it shows that even the rich and famous can be driven to drastic lengths to hide their baldness.

According to one man who has lost his hair, it was the most depressing and emasculating experience of his life.

"It was awful," says Andrew (not his real name). "I almost gave up on myself. Some people just don't look attractive without hair so you think you might as well give up and become an old, fat bloke. It's a terrible feeling."

So as cosmetic treatments improve for women, isn't it time our fellas had things a little easier? Well, it looks like from now on all men could have a good hair day.

A new technique of hair transplantation, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), could be the answer. The main problem for men is that each hair on the scalp is programmed to become sensitive to the male hormones DHT which appear during puberty. For some men the hormones can make the follicle fade and die.

But most bald men have plenty of resilient, life-long follicles - they're just all at the back of the head. And doctors have now found a way to make the most of this.

Hair transplantation surgeons take individual hairs from the back of the head and implant them in balding and thinning areas on the top or front of the head. Unlike old techniques which involved removing strips of hair, the FUE will leave no scars.

Men will only need to go through the process once or twice in their lives because once the follicle is in place it will continue to grow naturally.

Andrew, who went through FUE surgery with expert hair surgeon Dr Theo Vernikos, says having hair again has made him feel like the confident guy he used to be. "I started losing my hair at 17 and it took about 10 years until it was virtually all gone at the front and top," he says."In my early 20s I thought receding hair was the end of the world. Then after a few years it was the thinning that was the end of the world when I had these huge bald patches. There aren't many options for a bloke, so most of us just bite the bullet and shave it all off.

Some guys suit the shaved head look, but I looked terrible.

"To look attractive I need hair. So when I shaved my head, I kind of gave up on myself.

"I stopped going to the gym, put on weight and just accepted that I looked old and unattractive. It was very depressing."

But a few years later, after speaking to a friend whose husband had gone through FUE surgery with Dr Vernikos, he decided to give it a go.

"I couldn't believe how good it looked on this guy," Andrew says. "It looked really natural so I thought I'd try it out. And I'm so glad I did.

"There are no scars and after all that time feeling rubbish, I've actually got hair again. It took a few months for it to get thicker, but now it feels like I've gone back years.
